Why Was My Hosting Suspended, and How Do I Get Back Online?

Account suspension is temporary and reversible. Here is why it happens, what suspension actually means for your data and files, and how to reactivate quickly.

Account suspension is a temporary, reversible state — not a deletion, and in almost every case, not something that requires technical work to undo. Your files, databases, and emails are still intact; the account has simply been paused, and reactivation is usually fast once the underlying reason is resolved.

The single most common cause is an overdue invoice. The second most common is a resource usage limit being exceeded. Both are addressed below, along with what to do if neither applies to you.

Why Suspension Happens

1. An unpaid or overdue invoice

By far the most common reason. Hosting accounts are billed on a recurring cycle, and if an invoice goes unpaid past a grace period, the account is automatically suspended as a safeguard — both to prompt resolution and to protect the account from running indefinitely without payment.

2. Resource usage limits exceeded

Shared and managed hosting plans come with resource allocations (CPU, memory, the number of simultaneous processes your site can run) appropriate to that plan's tier. If a site experiences a traffic spike, a runaway script, or a plugin consuming far more than its allocation, the hosting environment may suspend the account to protect the stability of the broader server.

3. A Terms of Service flag

Less common — usually related to malware or compromised files being detected on the account, abuse complaints, or activity that violates the hosting agreement. This type of suspension is the one most likely to require a conversation with support rather than a simple self-service fix.

4. A pending account change

Occasionally a suspension is part of a deliberate transition — a plan change, a migration step, or an account closure in progress — rather than a problem at all.

What Suspension Does (and Does Not) Mean

Suspended: Your website is inaccessible, email sending or receiving is typically paused, and your control panel access may be restricted.

Not affected: Your files, databases, and email data remain stored exactly as they were. No data is deleted as part of suspension itself.

How to Reactivate Your Account

If it is a billing issue:

  1. Log in to your client area / billing portal.
  2. Check for an outstanding invoice — this is almost always visible immediately on the dashboard.
  3. Pay the invoice.
  4. In most cases, the account reactivates automatically within a few minutes of payment being processed, without needing to contact support at all.

Important note for EFT payments: Manual EFT payments can sometimes take up to 3 business days to reflect in our system. A proof of payment email is not always acceptable as confirmation that payment has been received — we can only allocate payment once it clears in our bank account. To avoid suspension, always ensure your payment is made well before the due date, especially if paying by EFT.

If it is a resource usage issue:

  1. Contact support — this type requires a quick review before reactivation, since simply turning the account back on without addressing the cause risks an immediate repeat suspension.
  2. Support can advise whether the fix is a quick optimisation (e.g. a misbehaving plugin), or whether your current plan's resource allocation no longer matches your site's actual needs.

If it is a Terms of Service or security-related flag:

  1. Contact support directly rather than attempting to resolve this alone.
  2. Be prepared to discuss what has been found — support will guide you through cleanup steps before reactivation.

If you are not sure which applies:

Check your suspension notification email first — it specifies the reason. If you cannot find it or it is unclear, contact support directly and we will confirm the cause immediately.

How Long Does Reactivation Take?

  • Billing-related: Typically minutes after payment, often fully automated
  • Resource-related: Usually same-business-day once the cause is reviewed
  • Security or ToS-related: Varies depending on what needs to be cleaned up

Preventing Future Suspensions

  • Set up auto-renewal on your billing account to avoid invoices being missed
  • Keep your billing contact email current — suspension notices are only useful if they reach an inbox someone checks
  • Keep plugins and themes updated — outdated software is one of the most common paths to a security-related suspension

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my files or emails during suspension?

No. Suspension pauses access; it does not delete data. Data loss would only be a concern after a prolonged, unresolved suspension eventually leading to account termination — which is a separate, much later stage.

Can I reactivate myself without contacting support?

For billing-related suspensions, yes — paying the outstanding invoice typically triggers automatic reactivation.

My account was suspended but I am sure my invoice is paid — what is going on?

Double-check the invoice is marked as paid (not just submitted) in your client area. If everything looks correct and the account is still suspended, contact support directly.
