How to Log In to WordPress and Manage Your User Account Print

  • 0

This article covers getting into your WordPress dashboard and looking after your own WordPress user: changing your password, changing the name shown on your posts and getting back in if you've forgotten your password.

Log in to WordPress

Directly:

  1. Go to https://example.co.uk/wp-admin, replacing example.co.uk with your domain. If WordPress is in a folder, add it, for example https://example.co.uk/blog/wp-admin.
  2. Enter your WordPress username (or email address) and password, then click Log In.

From cPanel, without a password:

  1. Log in to cPanel and open WordPress Toolkit.
  2. Find your site and click Log in. The dashboard opens straight away.

See WordPress Toolkit for everything else it can do.

Change your password

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Users › Profile.
  2. Scroll to Account Management and click Set New Password.
  3. WordPress suggests a strong password. Keep it, or type your own, and save it in a password manager.
  4. Click Update Profile.

Change the name shown on your posts

  1. Go to Users › Profile.
  2. Fill in First Name, Last Name or Nickname with the name you want.
  3. Choose it from Display name publicly as.
  4. Click Update Profile.

Your username itself can't be changed from the profile page. Showing a display name that differs from your username also means you're not publishing your login name on every post.

Forgotten your password?

  • On the login page, click Lost your password?, enter your username or email address and follow the link in the email WordPress sends you.
  • If the email doesn't arrive, use WordPress Toolkit instead: log in with one click and set a new password in your profile, or change the administrator password from the site's settings in WordPress Toolkit.

Keep your login secure

  • Use a unique, strong password and don't share your login; add a separate user for anyone else who needs access (Users › Add New User), with the lowest role that works for them.
  • Our free EDZNET Security Guard plugin adds two-factor authentication and protects administrator accounts. See the EDZNET Security Guard guide.
  • Getting a challenge page or can't reach the login page at all after several failed attempts? Your IP may have been blocked by our firewall; see how to get your IP unblocked.
