Use cPanel's Zone Editor when you need to point a subdomain at another server, add a www alias, or paste in a verification TXT record for a service such as Google Search Console or Microsoft 365. Not sure which record does what? Our guide to DNS records explained covers the basics.
Before you start: changes in the Zone Editor only take effect if your domain uses our nameservers. If your DNS is managed somewhere else, such as at your registrar or Cloudflare, make the change there instead.
Add an A or CNAME record
- Log in to cPanel and go to Domains › Zone Editor.
- Find your domain and click + A Record or + CNAME Record.
- In Name, enter the host you want, for example
shop. cPanel completes it asshop.example.co.uk. - For an A record, enter the IP address in Address. For a CNAME, enter the hostname it should point to in CNAME, for example
shops.provider.com. - Click Add an A Record or Add a CNAME Record.
A name can't have a CNAME and other records at the same time, so delete any existing A record for that name first.
Add a TXT record (for example, domain verification)
- In Domains › Zone Editor, click Manage next to your domain.
- Open the Add Record drop-down and choose Add "TXT" Record.
- Enter the Name your provider asks for. Use the bare domain (
example.co.uk.) if they say@or leave it blank. - Paste the value into Record exactly as given, then click Save Record.
You can have several TXT records on the same name. The exception is SPF: keep only one SPF record (the one starting v=spf1) and add new services to it rather than creating a second.
Edit or delete a record
- Go to Domains › Zone Editor and click Manage next to your domain.
- Use the Filter buttons or the search box to find the record.
- Click Edit, make your change and click Save Record, or click Delete and confirm.
Good to know
- TTL (time to live) controls how long other servers cache the record. If you're about to change a record, lower its TTL a day beforehand so the change spreads faster.
- Don't delete records you don't recognise, such as
mail,webmail,cpanelor_domainkey. Your email and cPanel access depend on them. - Changes are live on our nameservers straight away, but other networks may keep the old answer until the TTL runs out. Check progress with our DNS checker or see how to check if a DNS change has propagated.
