FileZilla is a free FTP program for Windows, macOS and Linux. It's the easiest way to upload a whole website or move lots of files at once. This guide sets it up to connect securely to your EDZNET hosting using FTP over TLS.
1. Install FileZilla
Download FileZilla Client (not Server) from the official site, filezilla-project.org. During installation, read each screen carefully. Some installers offer bundled extra software, so decline any offers you didn't ask for.
2. Save your site in Site Manager
- Open FileZilla and go to File › Site Manager, then click New site and give it a name.
- Set Protocol to FTP - File Transfer Protocol.
- In Host, enter your domain, for example
example.co.uk, or the server hostname from your hosting welcome email. Leave Port empty to use 21. - Set Encryption to Require explicit FTP over TLS.
- Set Logon Type to Normal.
- Enter your User and Password. For an extra FTP account, use the full username, such as
designer@example.co.uk. Your main cPanel username and password also work and give access to your whole account. See FTP accounts. - Click Connect.
3. Accept the certificate
The first time you connect, FileZilla may show an Unknown certificate window. If you connected using your domain name, the certificate may be issued to our server's hostname instead. That's expected on shared hosting. Check the details, tick Always trust this certificate in future sessions and click OK. Using the server hostname as the host avoids the mismatch.
4. Work with your files
- The left side shows your computer and the right side shows your hosting. Your main website lives in
public_html. - Upload: drag files from the left to the right, or right-click and choose Upload. Progress shows in the queue at the bottom.
- Download: select files or folders on the right (Ctrl or Cmd for several), right-click and choose Download.
- Create a folder: right-click an empty space on the right and choose Create directory.
- Delete: right-click and choose Delete. On the server this is permanent, with no trash.
Can't connect?
- Login incorrect: check you used the full username with
@example.co.ukfor extra FTP accounts, and re-type the password. - Timeouts or "connection refused": your network may be blocking FTP. Test port 21 with our port checker. Keep FileZilla's default passive mode on.
- Worked before, now times out everywhere: repeated failed logins can cause our firewall to block your IP address. See getting your IP unblocked.
