How to Create or Remove a Subdomain in cPanel Print

  • 0

A subdomain is a separate address under your main domain, such as blog.example.co.uk or staging.example.co.uk. It's useful for a test copy of your site, a separate app, or a section with its own content. In current cPanel, you create subdomains on the same page as other domains.

Create a subdomain

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to Domains › Domains.
  2. Click Create A New Domain.
  3. Enter the full subdomain, for example blog.example.co.uk.
  4. Untick Share document root so the subdomain gets its own folder. Check the Document Root cPanel suggests (for example blog.example.co.uk), or change it.
  5. Click Submit.

Upload files to the subdomain's document root, or install an application into it with WordPress Toolkit.

DNS and SSL

  • If your domain uses our nameservers, cPanel creates the DNS record for the subdomain automatically, and it should work within a few minutes.
  • If your DNS is managed elsewhere (for example at Cloudflare or your registrar), add an A record for the subdomain there that points to the same IP address as your main domain.
  • Once the subdomain resolves to our server, AutoSSL issues a free certificate for it on its next run. You can trigger one straight away from Security › SSL/TLS Status by clicking Run AutoSSL. See Free SSL with AutoSSL.

Remove a subdomain

  1. Go to Domains › Domains.
  2. Click Manage next to the subdomain.
  3. Click Remove Domain and confirm.

The subdomain's files aren't deleted. Remove its folder in File Manager if you no longer need it. If you only want the subdomain to forward visitors somewhere else, use a redirect instead (see how to redirect a domain or page).
