How to Park a Domain (Create an Alias) in cPanel Print

  • 0

A parked domain, which cPanel calls an alias, shows exactly the same website as your main domain. It's handy if you own extra versions of your name, such as example.com or example.co.za alongside example.co.uk, and want them all to reach your site.

Before you start

The extra domain must point to your hosting. Set its nameservers to ours (they're in your hosting welcome email and the client area) or point its A record at your server. See how to point your domain to EDZNET.

Create an alias

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to Domains › Domains.
  2. Click Create A New Domain.
  3. Enter the domain, for example example.com.
  4. Leave Share document root ticked. This is what makes it an alias of your main site.
  5. Click Submit.

Remove an alias

  1. Go to Domains › Domains.
  2. Click Manage next to the domain, then Remove Domain, and confirm.

Your website files aren't affected, because they belong to the main domain.

Alias or redirect?

An alias shows the same content at two addresses. Search engines prefer one main (canonical) address for a site, so for SEO it's usually better to redirect the extra domains to your main one. Visitors who type example.com then land on https://example.co.uk, and only one address appears in search results. To do that, add the alias as above, then create a permanent 301 redirect for it. See how to redirect a domain or page.

If the extra domain should be a separate website with its own content, add it as an addon domain instead (see addon domains).
