How to Set Up Your Email in Mozilla Thunderbird Print

  • 0

Thunderbird is a free desktop mail app for Windows, macOS and Linux. This guide shows you how to add your EDZNET email address to it, and what to do if it can't find the settings itself.

Add your account

  1. Open Thunderbird. If it's your first account, the setup screen opens automatically. Otherwise open the ☰ menu and choose New Account › Existing Email (in older versions, New › Existing Mail Account).
  2. Enter your name, your full email address (e.g. you@example.co.uk) and your email password. Tick Remember password if this is your own computer.
  3. Click Continue. Thunderbird looks up the settings for your domain.
  4. If it offers a choice, select IMAP and click Done.

If you need to enter the settings manually

Click Configure manually and enter:

IncomingOutgoing
ProtocolIMAPSMTP
Hostnamemail.example.co.ukmail.example.co.uk
Port993465
Connection securitySSL/TLSSSL/TLS
Authentication methodNormal passwordNormal password
UsernameYour full email addressYour full email address

Click Re-test, then Done. The full list of settings is in email settings for mail apps, and cPanel's Email › Email Accounts › Connect Devices page shows the exact server names for your mailbox.

Everyday use

  • Thunderbird checks for new mail when it opens and every few minutes after that. Click Get Messages to check straight away.
  • With IMAP, deleting a message in Thunderbird also deletes it on the server, so it disappears from webmail and your phone too.

Troubleshooting

  • Security exception warning: this usually means the server name doesn't match the certificate. Rather than confirming the exception, change the hostname to the one shown on the Connect Devices page.
  • Login keeps failing: check the password by logging in to webmail. Too many failed attempts can get your IP blocked. See how to get your IP unblocked.
